Yoga sūtras is famous among many, especially among the spiritual seekers in the western world. Sometimes, we wonder whether we could suggest them to read it to come to the conclusion of bhakti. Is it an authorized work? Can devotees read or recommend it to others?
For this we need to understand who is Patañjali, the author of the work.
There are six schools of thoughts (ṣaḍ darśana) that take Vedas as the authorities and try to explain the nature of this phenomenal world, oneself, the Absolute Truth (or God), and the relationship among these. These are sāṅkhya, yoga, pūrva-mīmāṁsa, uttara-mīmāṁsa (vedānta), nyāya, and vaiśeṣika.
Patañjali is the authority for the yoga school of thought. On the other hand, we, as Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, belong to uttara-mīmāṁsa school of thought.
All the four sampradāyas with its heads as Brahmā, Kumāras, Rudra and Śrī are vaiṣṇava sampradāyas and they belong to the uttara-mīmāṁsa school of thought. The sage Vyāsa is the authority for this school of thought.
So for our school of thought, we don't take Patañjali as the authority to come to conclusion about what Vedas are speaking. So, we can't share our siddhānta through the yoga-sūtras with others.
Nevertheless Patañjali is also a ṛṣi. HG Garuḍa prabhu is writing a work on yoga sūtras, looking at it from the view point of bhakti. That would be an interesting work to read.
